Only in the sense that you should simply follow the rules — obey them and Singapore is one of the easiest, safest places you will ever visit. Do not bring chewing gum in, as its import is banned. Vapes and e-cigarettes are completely illegal — leave them at home, because they will be confiscated and fined heavily if found. Do not litter or spit, and cross at the proper signals rather than jaywalking. None of this cramps a normal family holiday; it is the reason the city is so spotless and orderly. Common sense keeps you well clear of trouble.

Small in size, yes, but it packs an astonishing amount in, and four to five days fills comfortably. There is Sentosa and Universal Studios, Gardens by the Bay with its Cloud Forest and light show, the Night Safari, the Zoo, Marina Bay, plus the colour and food of Little India and Chinatown. On cost, it has a reputation for being pricey, but it is very manageable with planning — hawker centres serve superb meals cheaply, the MRT is inexpensive, and we book the paid attractions in advance to keep the budget sensible. You will not run out of things to do.

Book online, always. It works out cheaper than the gate price, and on weekends, Indian school holidays and long weekends the dated time-slots genuinely sell out — turning up hoping to walk in can mean disappointment. Pre-booking also lets you skip the ticket queues and get straight in, which matters when you are travelling with restless kids. The same goes for the cable car and the aquarium, which are often cheaper bundled together. Wonderfully easy — this is one of the most family- and senior-friendly cities anywhere. The MRT is clean, cheap, fully air-conditioned and everything is signposted in English, so there is no language barrier at all. Stations and malls have lifts and escalators everywhere, making them genuinely stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and pavements are smooth and safe to walk. The one real challenge is the heat and humidity, which tires little ones and elders quickly — so we plan indoor, air-conditioned stops through the middle of the day and keep the walking for mornings and evenings.

Singapore is very nearly cashless, so you barely need notes. Your Visa and Mastercard, and contactless tap on phones, work almost everywhere — shops, taxis, restaurants, even hawker stalls increasingly. One handy tip: pick up an EZ-Link card, or just tap a contactless bank card, for the MRT and buses. Do keep a small amount of cash for the odd older hawker stall or wet market. One thing to note — Indian UPI does not work for tourists in Singapore, so do not rely on it; carry one good international card and you are completely sorted.
