The easiest first international trip for a Bangalore family
Singapore is the trip we recommend most for families taking their first big international holiday from Bangalore. It is a clean, safe, English-friendly city where everything works — the MRT trains, the taxis, the food courts — and you can do a glittering skyline, a world-class zoo and a full theme-park day all within a short drive. With a direct flight of roughly four and a half hours from BLR, you can have breakfast at home and dinner under the Supertrees the same day.
From the light-and-laser show at Marina Bay Sands to the cloud forests of Gardens by the Bay, the rides at Universal Studios on Sentosa, and the famous hawker centres serving chilli crab and Hainanese chicken rice, Singapore packs a lot into a small island. It is compact, walkable, kid-friendly, and full of little touches — clean toilets, vegetarian options, Tamil widely spoken — that make it comfortable for Indian travellers. Are the strict laws and fines — chewing gum, jaywalking, vaping — something we need to worry about?
Only in the sense that you should simply follow the rules — obey them and Singapore is one of the easiest, safest places you will ever visit. Do not bring chewing gum in, as its import is banned. Vapes and e-cigarettes are completely illegal — leave them at home, because they will be confiscated and fined heavily if found. Do not litter or spit, and cross at the proper signals rather than jaywalking. None of this cramps a normal family holiday; it is the reason the city is so spotless and orderly. Common sense keeps you well clear of trouble.
Is Singapore too small or expensive to fill four or five days?
Small in size, yes, but it packs an astonishing amount in, and four to five days fills comfortably. There is Sentosa and Universal Studios, Gardens by the Bay with its Cloud Forest and light show, the Night Safari, the Zoo, Marina Bay, plus the colour and food of Little India and Chinatown. On cost, it has a reputation for being pricey, but it is very manageable with planning — hawker centres serve superb meals cheaply, the MRT is inexpensive, and we book the paid attractions in advance to keep the budget sensible. You will not run out of things to do.
Universal Studios and the Sentosa attractions — book ahead or buy at the gate?
Book online, always. It works out cheaper than the gate price, and on weekends, Indian school holidays and long weekends the dated time-slots genuinely sell out — turning up hoping to walk in can mean disappointment. Pre-booking also lets you skip the ticket queues and get straight in, which matters when you are travelling with restless kids. The same goes for the cable car and the aquarium, which are often cheaper bundled together. Travelling with kids and elders — how easy is getting around?
Wonderfully easy — this is one of the most family- and senior-friendly cities anywhere. The MRT is clean, cheap, fully air-conditioned and everything is signposted in English, so there is no language barrier at all. Stations and malls have lifts and escalators everywhere, making them genuinely stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, and pavements are smooth and safe to walk. The one real challenge is the heat and humidity, which tires little ones and elders quickly — so we plan indoor, air-conditioned stops through the middle of the day and keep the walking for mornings and evenings.
Do we need cash, and will our cards or UPI work?
Singapore is very nearly cashless, so you barely need notes. Your Visa and Mastercard, and contactless tap on phones, work almost everywhere — shops, taxis, restaurants, even hawker stalls increasingly. One handy tip: pick up an EZ-Link card, or just tap a contactless bank card, for the MRT and buses. Do keep a small amount of cash for the odd older hawker stall or wet market. One thing to note — Indian UPI does not work for tourists in Singapore, so do not rely on it; carry one good international card and you are completely sorted.
