Why Varanasi belongs on every Indian's bucket list
They say Varanasi is older than history itself — the eternal city where the Ganges, India's holiest river, curves past a sweep of ancient stone ghats. This is the spiritual soul of the country, a place of fire-lamps and temple bells, of pilgrims at dawn and chanting priests at dusk. For us at Oyster, sending a family or a quiet couple to Kashi is one of the most moving journeys we plan — a short break that stays with you for years.
You can feel the whole rhythm of the city from the river. A sunrise boat ride glides past men praying in the shallows and women lighting diyas; come evening, the grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat lights up the riverfront with synchronised lamps and drums. Add the newly built Kashi Vishwanath corridor, the Buddhist calm of Sarnath, the silk lanes and Ramnagar Fort, and even two or three nights feel rich and complete.

Travel tips from our team
- Dress modestly for temples and be ready to leave phones/cameras outside shrines like Kashi Vishwanath
- For the Ganga Aarti, take a small boat for an uncrowded front-row view; reach early on festival days
- The riverside lanes are narrow and stepped — pack comfortable shoes; tell us if you need a wheelchair-friendly pace
- Carry small cash for boatmen, diya offerings and bazaar shopping
- For Dev Deepawali (November), book flights and hotels 2–3 months ahead — it is the busiest, most beautiful week
- Be gentle with cameras around the cremation ghats — these are places of mourning
Varanasi, answered
When is the best time to visit Varanasi?
October to March, cool and pleasant for ghat walks, boat rides and temples. November's Dev Deepawali — when the ghats glow with countless diyas — is the most magical time (book 2–3 months ahead). Avoid the April–June heat and the monsoon.
How many days do I need?
Two to three nights for the heart of the city — the Aarti, a sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath, Sarnath and the old-city lanes. Add Ayodhya and Prayagraj for 5–6 nights.
Can you arrange the Ganga Aarti and the sunrise boat ride?
Yes — we arrange a private or shared boat for the evening Aarti and an early pre-dawn boat ride along the ghats; both are included in our plans.
How do I reach Varanasi from Bangalore?
Direct flights from Bengaluru (~2.5h on IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express); one-stop options via Delhi, Mumbai or Hyderabad are a little cheaper. We book the connection and transfers.
What is included in an Oyster Varanasi package?
Return flights, a mid-range riverside hotel, all airport and sightseeing transfers and a shared Ganges boat ride. Temple guides, private boats and the spiritual-circuit extension can be added.
