The Northeast trip your photos will never quite do justice to
Meghalaya literally means the abode of clouds, and once you've stood on a hilltop at Laitlum watching the mist pour over the canyon, you'll understand why our Bangalore travellers keep calling it the most magical state they've seen. This is offbeat Northeast India at its finest — Shillong, the easygoing Scotland of the East, gives way to Sohra (Cherrapunji), one of the wettest places on earth, where waterfalls thunder off the plateau into Bangladesh below.
The headline act is the living root bridges — hand-grown over decades from rubber-tree roots, with the famous Double Decker at Nongriat reached by a sweaty but unforgettable trek down thousands of stone steps. Add the glass-clear Umngot river at Dawki, where boats seem to float on air, and Mawlynnong, Asia's cleanest village, and you have a green, watery, wonderfully different India. We arrange flights, comfortable stays and a private cab with a local driver-guide.

Travel tips from our team
- No Inner Line Permit is needed for Indian travellers in Meghalaya — carry a valid government photo ID (neighbouring NE states do need permits, so plan side-trips with us)
- The Double Decker root bridge trek is ~3,500 steep steps each way (4–6 hours round trip) — carry water, wear grip shoes, tell us your fitness level
- Oct–Apr gives the clearest skies and best Dawki water clarity
- Pack layers and a light rain jacket year-round — a shower can roll in anytime
- Most of Meghalaya is best covered by private cab on hilly roads; we keep days unrushed
- Carry cash — many villages, homestays and falls have limited card or UPI coverage
Meghalaya, answered
When is the best time to visit Meghalaya?
October to April is ideal — clear skies, pleasant 15–25°C and waterfalls still flowing, with the best Dawki river clarity. Monsoon (June–September) is spectacularly green but very wet, since this is one of the rainiest regions on earth.
How many days do I need for Meghalaya?
Five to six nights. Five covers Shillong, Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong; six or seven lets you add the Double Decker trek and the Jaintia Hills.
Can I see the root bridges and do the Dawki boating?
Yes — the Double Decker at Nongriat is a 4–6 hour round-trip trek (we offer easier single-span bridges otherwise), and Dawki boating is gentle and clearest in the cooler months.
How do I reach Meghalaya?
No direct flight — fly Bengaluru to Guwahati (usually one-stop, ~5–6h), then drive about 3 hours to Shillong. We arrange flights, pickup and a private cab.
What is included in an Oyster Meghalaya package?
Return Bengaluru–Guwahati flights, hotels, a private cab with a local driver, all transfers and breakfast. Boating, entry fees, guides and meal upgrades can be added.
